The Bellevue Literary Press Consilience Project: Bringing together medicine, science, and humanism through literature

The greatest enterprise of the mind has always been and always will be the attempted linkage of the sciences and humanities.

—Edward O. Wilson, Consilience

The mission of Bellevue Literary Press is to bring together medicine, science, and humanism through literature. We believe that by sharing “the wonder, terror, and exaltation of being on the edge of being” (Anatole Broyard, Intoxicated by My Illness), physicians and patients might be better informed, able to cope with the demands that illness imposes, and that medical care will be more humane.

It is in this spirit that we have founded The Consilience Project, which, in collaboration with the greater NYU community, will bring together the public, writers, artists, and academics from diverse disciplines in the sciences and the arts in an open and spirited dialogue. The activities sponsored by The Consilience Project will be grounded in the topics addressed within our book publishing program thereby augmenting its impact, and foster the communication of our mission to an even broader public.

Public events and educational activities of The Consilience Project include:

  • Readings and panel discussions for the general public and the professional medical community at NYU and elsewhere
  • Humanistic medicine educational programs
  • Educational and artistic exhibitions
  • Science literacy initiatives

Members of The Consilience Project pledge sustained annual contributions of $25,000 or more to support the Bellevue Literary Press to help make these activities possible. The benefits of membership range from complimentary Bellevue Literary Press books to invitations to special events and exclusive dinners with leading authors, scientists, and intellectuals.

WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Bellevue Literary Press (BLP) raises important issues that affect us all regarding illness, the human experience in the practice of medicine, and science policy, promotes science literacy in unaccustomed ways, and contributes to society new tools for thinking about our world.

Our distribution of publications to schools of medicine is especially important in stimulating medical students to think more deeply about these issues and in shaping a more knowledgeable and humanistic approach to the practice of medicine.

Please help sustain our publishing efforts by making a donation to the BLP as soon as possible. We can't continue to do this work without your support!

Bellevue Literary Press, as a project of the New York University School of Medicine, has 501(c)3 nonprofit status and depends on contributions from individuals and foundations for its operations. As we are a small independent press, our net revenue from book sales covers only a tiny portion of our costs. BLP could not exist without the generosity of foundations and individuals like you.
